Installing App via SD card

Post by townsend » Wed Jul 13, 2011 7:09 pm

I'm having a lot of trouble getting Windows 7 to recognize my LG Optims V phone.
Is it possible to install an app via the SD card?
I've tried copying the .apk file everywhere on the SD card.
There must be more to it.

Don't bother with the SD card.

There are free apps out there that will run on your phone as a web Server.

Where you can run INetExplorer or FireFox on your PC and connect to your phone via

(your phones) IPAddress:Port number.

I'm using Remote VNC and Remote Desktop.
When one doesn't work for whatever reason I use the other.

This allows me to copy files to and from the phone and PC.
And all kinds of other cool things.

----

Also, my windows does NOT recognize my phone either.
But LiveCode Development | Test Target does.
Sometimes I have to restart LiveCode after I've plugged in.

I've been using ES File Explorer and Dropbox. Works great. The latest version of ES File Explorer has built-in dropbox support. You just move the .apk into your dropbox on the computer, find it in ES File Explorer on the Android device, tap it, and it installs. You don't even need to have Dropbox installed on the phone (but it's nice to have anyway.)

Thanks Barry-- I was sure glad to see your response.
After speaking the the LG tech guy for my phone,
I had given up. But-- my phone still won't connect.

Wow! Jacqueline-- You may have just saved my Android Project.

I've downloaded and setup both ES File Explorer and Dropbox. I'm almost there!
When I click on my app, I get a prompt on permissions, asking me if I want to install.
When I click Install, a progress bar appears and says, Installing. Great.
But then-- alas-- I always get the message, Application Not Installed.

I do have my phone set to allow installation from unknown sources.
And I still have 178 MB of space on my phone. I'm stuck-- again.
Has this every happened to you? Any other suggestions?

Thanks-- I really appreciate your help.

Update-- I think I found the problem!

When installing a 4.6.2 app, I am asked to verify these permissions:
Network Communication: full internet access.
Hardware Controls: take pictures.
After the Installing notice and progress bar, I always get the message, Application Not Installed.
When I tried the same thing with 4.6.1, the Hardware Controls permission wasn't there--
and-- the app installed correctly!! Finally.

I tried removing the default libraries: Geometry, Internet & Printing from the General tab of the Application Settings, but that didn't help. The good news is I CAN test with 4.6.1. Also, now we know it's a 4.6.2 problem.

Thank again for that Dropbox tip Jackie!

You're welcome, I like saving things. :) It's a hassle to get my device to hook up to the computer (for some reason I need to reboot it first) so finding a workaround was a priority for me. You can also just use Dropbox alone and copy the file to another location, but ES File Explorer makes it much easier.

It would be good if you could report the permissions error in the QCC, it's unlikely the team will know about the problem unless it shows up there.

(Edit:) Just saw that you don't have access. I'll report this one too. But before I do, could you try moving the apk to another folder and installing manually from there? This would eliminate the possibility that the issue is in ES File Explorer, and save the team a goose chase. I like to have as much verified as possible before I put bugs in the database.

This but is actually more serious, as nothing I build with 4.6.2 can be installed to my LG Optimus V, Android 2.2 phone. I wonder why no one else has had this problem. (??) Could it be my phone?

Actually, I haven't been using ES File Explorer to install. I simply copy the .apk file to my desktop DropBox, and it appears in my phone. Right from phone's DropBox, I click on the app, and it installs-- that is if it was built with 4.6.1.

To make sure it isn't a DropBox issue, I just ran a couple of tests. I built the same app with both 4.6.1 and 4.6.2 and copied it directly to the SD card. The results were the same-- worked with 4.6.1-- not with 4.6.2.

I'd be glad to run any additional tests. Just let me know.
Can anyone sign up for the Quality Control?
Is that the same as being a beta tester?

I found that on Android I had to remove /Un-Install my previous installs.
Some of them were showing up as multiple installs of the same app with the same name.
I couldn't see the deference.

I've also found even though win32 does NOT recognize one of my HD2 phones,
LiveCode does recognize the same phone thru Development | Test Target.

Just a thought - have you got the settings so that it will not allow "non-market" apps to be installed? (The "Unknown Sources" option under Settings - Applications)

Thanks SparkOut-- yes, I have allowed non-market apps to be installed.

But-- in light of Barry's comments, I now remember that Elanor said, version 4.6.2 REQUIRED Android apps need to be digitally signed. That's why my attempts to install 4.6.2 did not work.

Thanks everyone for helping me work through this!
