Is MobGui the only way of developing Mobile Applications?

Post by mhoneywill » Wed Jul 11, 2012 5:50 pm

Hi

I'm looking at options for mobile development using Livecode, it looks like MobGui seems to be the prefered way to go.

I've noticed that the current version V0.28 has not been updated since 2011 and also that there were some postings here about people having problems contacting the author John Craig.

I hope you don't mind if I post some questions here for people that already use MobGui

Is MobGui pretty feature complete or is it still a work in progress? I want to develop for both iOS and Android.
I would also like to know if there was an on going development path for MobGui? If Livecode develop support for new mobile platforms will MobGui support these (or at least consider it)?
I've also notice the tmControls package http://tmtools.tactilemedia.com/tmcontrol/ but am not sure if this provides the same functionality as MobGui, or is a different beast altogether?

From the information I see posted it looks like there was lots of information / Postings / Youtube videos relating to MobGui but its all gone a bit quite recently. I remember RunRev were even offering free licences at one time with upgrades. Seems like this is functionality that should be built into the core product.

Thanks for your input

Cheers

martin

Hi Martin,

There is also this. Not as extensive as MobGUI, but it might get you started.

Kind regards,

I'm guessing it will be, and that's why John has gone quiet. He's too busy working for LC :) (I have NO knowledge about this - none at all. Just guessing.)

There's also the iPhone Control Kit. Has a lot of controls, but is a bit more hands-on than MobGUI.

Note that you can develop for iOS and other mobile platforms just fine... The GUI will jsut look as if it escaped from the prison of "early nineties unix designs" :)

There's also an iOS theme in Scott Rossi's tmControl: http://tmtools.tactilemedia.com/tmcontrol/

I had the following reply when I talked to Scott Rossi about tmControls

You can get more info here:
http://tmtools.tactilemedia.com/tmcontrol/index.html
See the FAQ:
http://tmtools.tactilemedia.com/tmcontrol/faq.html

If you're up for watching a few videos (they're a bit out of date, but still have useful info), you can see here:
How To Use:
http://tmtools.tactilemedia.com/tmcontr ... l_dev1.mov
How To Edit A tmControl Template -- Create Your Own SmartBackground http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oL1BzyZfsYY

There isn't an official trial version of tmControl only because I've been too busy to provide one, but clearly it's something I should make available.
I'll see if I can get something together for next week.

Hi,

What's wrong with simple black text? Blue text on a blue background is difficult to read.

Kind regards,

Thank you for bringing that up, Martin.

I've been thinking of buying MobGui but the lack of updates and communicate worries me.

Thank you everyone for the alternatives. =)

Looking forward to developing mobile applications using LiveCode!

Regards,
John
