LiveCode on Kindle Fire

Post by mcelvain » Sun Jul 30, 2023 11:09 pm

Is there a version of LiveCode which will open and run on a Kindle Fire ?

If the only option is to save a Macintosh LiveCode build as StandAlone which the Kindle will recognize, what is the workflow to achieve that ?

There is a recent thread asking about ChormeBooks.
https://forums.livecode.com/viewtopic.p ... 48#p224848

That is likely not helpful at all. What I mean is that I think the answer is "no".

These things are will likely be possible with the web based IDE that has been announced previously - I suspect there will be no willingness to derive clients for minor platforms (I mean minor from point of view of what developers largely use) in anticipation of web-based IDE that will work in most situations.

Having said that we've not really seen a working example of this and I probably wouldn't hold my breath... but at some point it is likely to be possible.

Does the Kindle Fire run Android apps? If so, I can't imagine anything specific to the device would need to be done to deploy to it.

Runs "Fire OS", a modded form of Android: so, the 'only' question has to be, "How much and in what way has it been modified?"

Or simpler, what happened when you tried?

I've had no trouble running LC Android apps on my Amazon tablet.

Am I misinterpreting these recent threads?

I am assuming that it is being asked whether LC can "run" on these other platforms, not that apps made with LC can run on them.

No?

Yes, it does appear he was also asking a second question about the IDE. That part isn't possible. So I provided an affirmative answer to the question that related to things that are possible.

I suspect a standalone may be run, but the IDE cannot.

Let us hope the OP knows the difference and is not getting muddled up.

As per the most recent blog post, the web IDE is in full development. I am part of the limited alpha test group. There is a long way to go still and many things are not yet implemented but what is there shows promise. The team is heavily focused on the project. I'm looking forward to using it on my Chromebook eventually, but it's a huge undertaking and will take some time to get there.

The commitment to the Emscripten method is a tough road. Even after the currently-eight-years-and-counting journey delivers a robust option, it emerges into a world already so full of truly web-native low-code tech that the business challenge is, politely, formidable.

LC's greatest strength is making multi-platform desktop apps. That's the one category where it's best-of-breed. I hope we don't lose that.

Yep, that is the only thing I do.

But I believe, from the chatter, that most users, especially new ones, are thinking mobile, no? I only make the point to ask you if LC is stronger on desktop than on mobile. Is it more capable there?

Example: make a scrolling field.

Desktop: drop a scrolling field onto the card.

Mobile: https://lessons.livecode.com/m/4069/l/9 ... ll-a-field
